By now, we are all familiar with the basic details. Four years ago today thousands of Trump supporters, including Donald Trump himself, gathered in Washington, DC to protest the certification of the 2020 presidential election results. They believed that the election was either stolen or at least rigged and that more investigations into the results were needed before certification. After the main rally, a segment of these protesters entered the Capitol Building, including the Senate chamber and then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office. Since then almost 1,500 people have been arrested on a series of charges, ranging from assaulting a police officer to entering or remaining in a restricted federal building or grounds.
These details are relatively uncontroversial. The interpretation of these details, however, is far more divisive. Those on the Left say that the events of that day were nothing less than an attempted insurrection by the Right, led by Donald Trump, seeking to overthrow a legitimate election and install Trump back into power by coup. It was a violent effort to destroy democracy in this country. According to this narrative, January 6, 2021 is one of the darkest days in American history.
On the other hand, those on the Right say that it was a peaceful demonstration to bring to light serious allegations regarding the integrity of the 2020 election. Democracy was threatened; not by the protesters, but by those who had undermined that election. The people who entered the Capitol Building were allowed to enter by law enforcement officials and no violent acts were committed (at least, not by the protestors). Further, the “storming” of the Capitol Building may well have actually been instigated by the Deep State to discredit Trump and his supporters.
So who is correct? Was it an attempted insurrection? Or was it a peaceful demonstration?
I would say it was both.
January 6th was an attempted insurrection, but it was an insurrection of the Left, not the Right. Whether or not the whole operation was instigated by Deep State forces, the fact remains that the protesters were peaceful, but immediately following that day’s events, the Left began a years-long extensive campaign to overthrow our democracy and install a permanent Leftist ruling class.
Consider the facts. If this was an insurrection by the Right, it was the most pitiful coup ever attempted. No organized or armed forces were involved. Trump did not coordinate some violent plan to overthrow the government (he, in fact, emphasized the need to remain peaceful that day). Even if some of the supposed insurrectionists were attempting a coup, there’s absolutely zero chance a gaggle of unarmed and unorganized protesters could have toppled our government and installed Trump as president. Zero. Democracy was under no threat that day; no one attempted to overthrow it. The purpose of the day was to defend democracy by bringing to light election irregularities.
However, the events of that day did launch a coordinated and vicious assault on democracy…by the Left. Forces in media, academia, government, and other elite institutions immediately labeled January 6th an “insurrection.” On the very day of the protests, the AP issued a statement that using the term “insurrection” was acceptable to describe what happened (“mob” and “riot” were also acceptable). Insurrection is a strong word, having a longstanding connotation of a coordinated attempt to overthrow a government. In the confusing hours after the January 6th protests, however, AP and other media outlets had already decided it was the proper term to describe what happened; in fact, it quickly became the only term used. The rapidity with which this was determined across the media landscape is suspicious, to say the least, and feeds into Deep State instigation theories.
The insurrection narrative had one purpose: discredit a president who received at least 74 million votes in the 2020 election and hopefully land him in jail. In other words, to remove a political opponent by non-democratic means. The Left further used this false narrative of an insurrection to label the MAGA movement as the greatest threat to democracy in history. And, it went on for years employing lawfare, propaganda, and relentless psyops based on the January 6th insurrection narrative to eliminate any and all political opposition.
We can know with confidence, however, that Trump broke no laws that day and made no attempt at an insurrection. Why? Because if he had, he surely would have been criminally charged for his actions. The Left’s lawfare tried in every way possible to convict Trump of any possible crime, and in the end it was only by novel legal theories and disputed paperwork filings unrelated to January 6th that a biased court was able to achieve their only successful convictions. In spite of the failure to convict (or even charge) Trump of any crime for January 6th, the overall narrative remains: Trump and his MAGA movement are a threat to democracy because it already has one attempted insurrection under its belt.
The reality is that the efforts of the Left to shut down Trump and the MAGA movement by lying about January 6th is itself an insurrection. It seeks to defeat political opponents outside the electoral process. It seeks to install, not elect, political puppets like Kamala Harris into office. It’s where the true threat to our democracy lies.
Fortunately, the American people recognized this attempted insurrection and rejected it…by means of a democratic election. Millions of voters understood what the Left was trying to do and so overwhelmingly elected Donald Trump as President in November. But we can’t rest, for we know the Left will continue to use any and all methods to oppose democracy and install themselves into power. They began this process on January 6, 2021, and they won’t stop until they win, or, we may hope, until they are completely and utterly defeated.
Yes, I’ve always known that the Jan 6 gathering was an effort by honest Americans to bring official attention and recognition to widespread ballot swindles which always rigged elections and unlawfully installed unelected Leftist apparatchiks.
But the Leftist apparatchiks in various circles used the demonstration to demonize the rightful address of their grievances by infiltrating them with agents who would act unlawfully in order to frame them as insurrectionists, thereby protecting their unlawfully held elections.
But it didn’t occur to me until now that protecting unlawfully held elections was itself an insurrection.
