This is a puzzle, but as a Christian I’d say it’s their lack of a Guiding Light which Christianity provided which set things in their proper order, with reason, is the reason they’ve become irrational. They’ve listened instead to the doomsaying misanthropes who have turned them into misanthropes who hate themselves who are irrationally willing to self-destruct.
What they’re doing is suicidal, which is what the Devil wants. They hate their present as much as they hate their past.
It’s like that rejoinder sometimes seen at college campuses which said, “Abandon hope, all ye who enter here”. I’d say they’ve gone there and lost hope.
To put it another way, they’re like a patient who’s been injected with deadly vaccines who has no hope for recovery.
