Haitian Voodou: Practiced in Springfield, Ohio?

Reports coming out of Springfield, Ohio detail the killing of swans, Canadian geese, ducks, cats, and dogs. Are these creatures being slaughtered by hungry Haitians when there are food stores available? Or does something darker–Haitian Voodou– account for the slaughter?

According to Wikipedia, Haitian Voodou is an African diasporic religion that developed in Haiti between the 16th and 19th centuries. It arose through a process of syncretism between religions of West, Central Africa, and Roman Catholicism. Voodou teaches the existence of a transcendent creator, Bondye, under whom are Iwa–spirits. Offerings to the lwa, and to spirits of the dead, include fruit, liquor, and sacrificed animals.

Western and American civilization have rejected their Christian heritage. Now Haitian Voodou has come to this land. It is being practiced in Springfield.

If you have the stomach for it, Slate has a picture gallery showing Haitian Voodou rituals, including possession by spirits, and animal sacrifice.

  1. It looks to me like they all want to do their own witch doctoring.
This could be an interesting subject to examine, such as why the black Africans who arrived in the Americas as slaves took different turns. I’m assuming the Haiitian practioners of Voodoo are the descendants of slaves who were brought to work the fields.
It’s interesting that the former slaves of the USA adopted the religion of their masters and even had their own churches.
But those of Haiiti didn’t, they chose to continue an approximation of their African beliefs. I wonder why? Did the Catholic Church attempt to minister to them or not? If it did, was the attempt accepted or rejected?
The Catholic Church built many missions throughout the Southwest, Some American Indians accepted it but many others did not. Perhaps the black Haiitians were among those who would not.
    I’m drawing parallels here.
No, witch doctoring with protected animals is not acceptable here.

    1. Since writing that short piece I’ve learned of the existence of sorcerers within voodou known for making zombies of people. They use a neurotoxin obtained from pufferfish for that evil purpose. They mix the neurotoxin with other substances such as powdered bone. So there in Springfield we now have a population of around 20,000 Haitians.
