Jesus Self-Identified as “Son of Man” and Played Down His Jewishness

Fun Fact: Despite being the Seed of Abraham and being born in the lineage of David, Jesus routinely under-emphasized His “Jewishness,” and instead, self-identified as “Son of Man,” which He called Himself in Scripture 88 times.

The term is from Daniel 7:13-14 and Isaiah 53, which His audience would’ve immediately recognized the prophetic context as referring to the Messiah’s dominion over all peoples, nations, and languages, and His atonement for many different kinds of people.

His chosen identity was always universal, and He clearly did not want to be pigeonholed as a Savior primarily of the Jews, but everyone.

In fact, a significant part of the New Testament is focused on dismissing the idea that Jesus is some kind of tribal deity or primarily a savior of Jews.

His global Messiahship is the entire “Mystery of the Gospel” spoken of so frequently, and is why He was very careful to avoid the framing you just gave.

So, when you insist on referring to Jesus the way you just did, for what is (let’s be honest) purely *geo-political* reasons and to invoke sympathy for modern Israel or Jewish interests, you’re actually undermining His global mission. It’s disrespectful.

Stop using my Savior as a cudgel to exploit Christians’s love of Jesus as rhetorical tool. His bio is not a weapon to accomplish your agenda. You’re not trying to teach people about Jesus with this biological detail, you’re trying to get something from them.

If you really believe that Jesus died and rose again, then you need to be delivering this message to the Jews, instead of lecturing the people who already believe it. The folks who need to hear this most are the ones whose ancestors screamed, “May His blood be on us and His children,” and whose descendants still reject Him.

If you cared half as much about the eternal souls of the Jewish people as you do about their real estate holdings, or shielding them from every criticism, you’d be telling them to repent instead of trying to turn Jesus into a Semitic mascot or an ancestral PR asset.
